From the Rush Chairman:

Why go Greek? Why SAE? These are questions asked by both students and parents alike. Well, this section is here to help give you some information on the fraternity system as a whole and a little information on what SAE can offer.

Consider these facts about the effects of fraternity experience as part of your Rockhurst University education:

Greeks excel in Scholarship.

- Greeks achieve higher scholarship ratings than the campus average (GPA).
- Greeks have a 10% higher rate of graduation than do non-Greeks.
- Greek Membership is affordable.
- The US Dept. of Education states that joining a fraternity is one of the best buys in a college education.

Greeks Achieve.

- 70% of those listed in "Who's Who in America" are Greek.
- 85% of the upper-level executives in the "Fortune 500 Companies" are Greek.
- 43 CEOs of the top 50 U.S. companies are Greek.

Greeks Lead.

- 75% of the members of the U.S. Congress are Greek.
- 85% of the U.S. Supreme Court Justices this century are/were Greek.
- 100 of 158 of those who have served on the Presidents Cabinet this century are/were Greek.
- All but 3 of the U.S. Presidents since 1825 have been Greek.

Greeks Give.

- As Alumni, Greeks give approximately 75% of all money donated to universities.
- As undergraduates, Greeks raise approximately $7 million per year for charities.
- As undergraduates, Greeks give approximately 850,000 volunteer hours per year.

Why Join SAE?

After viewing this web site, I hope that you have a better understanding of the involvement, activities and brotherhood of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. There are common bonds that the brothers of Missouri Delta share which separate our fraternity from others on this campus. We firmly believe that three qualities particularly set our chapter apart from all others: Diversity, Brotherhood, and Pride.

Diversity: There is no such thing as a stereotypical SAE; The Missouri Delta chapter is made up of a very diverse group of actives and alumni. We come from both small towns and big cities. We've got the athletically talented and the scholastically gifted. We've got those interested in music and those interested politics. But even with all our differences we still share one common bond...a brotherhood in Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

The Kansas City, St. Louis and Omaha areas alone have well over 5000 alumni members representing a wide variety of disciplines. So by pledging ΣΑΕ you are not just joining a group of well established college men, but a group of successful Alumni who are actively interested in your future.

Brotherhood: Although we are diverse, we are linked together through pledgeship as brothers. Many of our members have good friends in other fraternities, but we stand apart in our strong sense of unity as brothers. We strive to embody the ideals of The True Gentleman, and this bond particularly sets us apart.

Pride: We are proud of our athletic achievements, of our parties, and our involvement on campus and in the community. We have all earned the right to wear our letters, and it is with great pride that we display them on our campus and campuses across the nation.

As Rush Chairman, I urge you to look at all aspects of a fraternity during rush, and to choose a house you feel most comfortable in - a house that you feel is the best fit for you. No matter what direction you travel, I wish you the best of luck.

If you have any questions about rushing SAE or rush in general, please feel free to email or call me.

Sincerely,

David Reyes

FAQ's About Going Greek...

What should I act like during rush?
Above all, be yourself! Don't try to act differently during rush or go out of your way to impress people.
The best way to make friends and earn their respect is to act like you would any other day.

What
will increase my chance of getting a bid?
Here are some general pointers that will help you during the process:
  • Do your homework on each of the fraternities you might be interested in. Remember that you’re joining a national organization, not just a local group of guys. This commitment is for life and reaches far beyond the Rockhurst campus.
  • Each group is proud of their fraternity - - knowing a little bit about their organization is the ultimate compliment as it shows you're making an educated decision! (National Website Links: SAE, TKE, PKA, ADG)
  • Never criticize a brother, or another fraternity house. You never know who will be offended by your comments.
  • Get to know the other guys who are rushing. You may not wind up joining the same fraternity that they will but you will feel much more comfortable throughout the rush process.
  • Though it’s easy to think about “…that great party…” as a reason to join a particular group, that should be low on your list of deciding factors. We all love to party but, believe it or not, that’s only a small part of what makes up fraternity life.
  • Have fun! Rush can be one of the most fun and exciting times you'll have in college.

What if I feel I can't afford to join a fraternity ?
This is a common question. Although local and national dues are part of your responsibility as a member, financial hardship should never deter you from joining a fraternity. Talk to a representative of the fraternity you're interested in and they'll be able to explain how the financial system of the organization can work with you.

Isn't joining a Greek organization just "buying friends"?
Never heard that one before...
Take a serious look at the men and women involved in the Greek system at Rockhurst or other surrounding Universities. Examine the character of these people (and the statistics at the top of this page) and you'll see that the statement about "buying friends" doesn't hold water.

If you have a question you would like to ask (and there are no stupid questions), feel free to stop an SAE (or other Greek) on campus and ask them. If you would like to e-mail a question or submit one to be placed on this website, please click on the link below and e-mail your question to:

ReyesD@rockhurst.edu

(All e-mail quaries will be answerd to the best of our ability - - unless you ask about the meaning of life...you're on your own there.)

From the Missouri Delta Alumni Foundation Board:

Coming to college is a wonderful time to meet new people and to experience new things. As Alumni of Rockhurst (and SAE) we strive to provide our members with an atmosphere built on friendship and respect, that all can enjoy.

Joining ΣΑΕ at Rockhurst also gives you a network of students that are established on campus. Coming to any college will require a significant adjustment, but coming to one with the academic demands of Rockhurst can be quite a shock. Our members have been where you are and know what it takes to be successful in this environment. Joining this fraternity will provide a support group for your academic pursuits and beyond!

If you are interested and think that you are a MO Delta man click on the photo below and tell us about yourself. We look forward to meeting you and hopefully bonding with you, as only brothers can!
